This blog is about my journey. A journey from a life traditionally viewed as successful to a more authentic, rich life which is defined by my own values rather than the popular view. I have a highly paid job in a foreign country; I’m living in one of those expensive suburbs in a sought after American city; I have a large portfolio of properties and stocks; I travel all the time; I want for nothing. In all things, one would say I have the perfect life. Except I’ll let you in on a dirty little secret. All these things do not make happiness.
Pressure to perform in a high paid job does not make me happy. Losing sleep over the world financial collapse and worrying about my stock portfolio does not make me happy. Being away each and every month and completely losing any semblance of a routine does not make me happy.
Spending time with my husband, my dog, my friends and family does make me happy. Spending time in nature makes me happy. Travelling to foreign countries and immersing myself in a new culture makes me happy. Taking photographs and being creative makes me happy. Giving to others less fortunate and helping to make the world a better place does make me happy.
These things have always been known to me, but over the last year, a few events have brought this realisation into sharp clarity. Now I’m on the path to a simplified life where I can do work which is personally rewarding and I can spend less time on the job. I want to be able to enjoy the real beauty of this life without having to spend money to do so. I want the time to enjoy my relationships. I want to slow down to reduce my stress and concentrate on having a healthy, strong body which can take me to amazing places for many years to come. I want to do more to help our sick Earth and I want to see and experience as much of our world as I can. I want to learn.
This blog will cover many of my experiences and I hope to share much of what I learn along the way. I hope to build relationships with people who are also travelling this path, so please drop me a line or leave a comment.
